ACC Declining More Claims

There’s increasing attention on changes happening within New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Recent reporting from Radio New Zealand highlights that ACC is working through a projected $26 billion deficit, prompting a stronger focus on long-term financial sustainability.

As part of this, changes are being pushed through and they’re already starting to impact how claims are assessed.

What’s changing?

To manage rising costs, ACC is placing greater emphasis on:

  • Tighter claim assessments
  • More scrutiny around eligibility
  • A stronger focus on cost control

This means we’re seeing more claims being declined or more closely reviewed.

Why this matters more than ever

ACC remains an important safety net in New Zealand, but it’s not designed to cover everything and these changes are highlighting that more clearly.

ACC:

  • Covers injuries only (not illness)
  • Bases payments on declared income
  • Has strict criteria around what qualifies

Where people get caught out

This isn’t a new issue but it’s becoming more visible. Many people assume ACC will cover their full income, lifestyle costs and any situation where they can’t work – But that’s not always the case. We’ve broken this down in more detail on our earlier blog article where the gaps typically sit for self-employed business owners. https://lifestylecover.co.nz/the-acc-gap-most-business-owners-miss/

The solution:

ACC still plays a critical role but it works best when it’s part of a broader strategy. That’s where personal insurance comes in and is designed to fill the gaps, not replace ACC.

✔️ Income Protection / Mortgage / Rent Cover
Supports ongoing financial commitments

✔️ Trauma Cover
Covers serious health events ACC doesn’t

✔️ Health Insurance
Helps with faster access to treatment

With ACC tightening processes and focusing on sustainability, the margin for assumptions is shrinking. Understanding how ACC works and where it stops is key. Because when it comes to protecting your income and your future, it’s not about having one solution – it’s about having the right combination.
